August 8, 2024: Music and AI

An insightful discussion on the intersection of music and AI. Artists and academics gather to discuss their projects, challenges, and the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in music creation.

Explore state-of-the-art tools and interfaces and gain perspectives from artists across different backgrounds on AI’s evolving impact in the music design process.

With special thanks to the Consulate General of France in Vancouver.

MODERATOR

Dr. Patrick Parra Pennefather, Associate Professor, UBC Theatre and Film

PRESENTERS

Dr. Philippe Pasquier, Professor, SFU School of Interactive Arts and Technology

Philippe Pasquier is a Professor of Interactive Arts and Technology at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada. He is known for his work in the fields of artificial intelligence, computational creativity, and generative art. As the founder and director of the Metacreation Lab, he leads a research-creation team focused on developing novel AI systems for creative applications, particularly in music and visual arts. Together, they have made significant contributions to the study of generative models, machine learning for creativity, and human-AI collaboration in artistic contexts. Philippe is also recognized for his efforts in bridging the gap between artistic and scientific communities, often collaborating with artists, musicians, and technologists to push the boundaries of AI-assisted creativity.

Phil Tremble, Musician & Artist, Blockhaus DY10

Electronic musician, DJ, and self-taught sound artist, Phil Tremble began exploring modular synthesis in the 90s with the group Robonom. Since then, he has become an essential figure in the field of electronic and experimental music. Co-director of the Blockhaus DY10 studio, Phil is also behind numerous personal projects such as Rocade, WDO, and Tremble.

Phil Tremble will present the results of his work with MMM from the Metacreation Lab for Creative AI, showcasing a few pieces of music composed with the little help of MMM artificial intelligence.

Quentin Nolot, Artist-designer

Quentin Nolot is a French artist-designer based between Paris and Berlin. He discovered his style by blending musical hardware with various software to create unique renders, particularly for installations and performances, sound design, and music composition.

His work continually redefines and questions our relationship with the digital sphere, notably by eliminating standard interfaces, gathering data based on human movements and activities, and using it as a source of control and modulation. This approach democratizes the use of certain software by providing tools that simplify user interaction. His most recent work is about a tool that generates Midi signal and music out from user’s movements.

For this presentation Quentin will share his thoughts about how he integrated AI within his workflow, how he used it in its practice, and what’s the position and the opinion of an artist regards this tool.
